There is no public transport system to Tora. Here are your travel options:
Travelling from North:
Please note, the Manawatu Gorge (SH 3) has closed.
From the outskirts of Palmerston North either take the Saddle Road to connect with Woodville, or the Pahiatua Track to Pahiatua. From Woodville/Pahiatua travel south on State Highway 2 to Greytown. At the southern end of Greytown, (just on the outskirts) there is a sign to the left-hand side of the road directing you to Martinborough. From Martinborough use the directions provided below.
Wellington to the Tora Coastal Walk
You can drive to the walk by following the directions on the Google map. It is approximately 35 minutes from Martinborough to Whakapata Cottage (details also below – see ‘From Martinborough’). There is plenty of secure off road parking for any type of vehicle you may have. As the track is circular, you will finish your walk where you started – back at your car.
A Day Out Tours
We highly recommend Jim’s A Day Out Tours for hassle free, door to door, airport to airport service. This has proved a huge hit with our walkers.
A Day Out Tours can take your group on a tailored guided tour en-route to Tora via Greytown and Martinborough’s cafes, antique and boutique shops. Jim can recommend the best places for coffee, lunch or wine tasting and then drop you off at Tora between 4 – 5pm. He will collect you three days later.

Make your way to Martinborough. From Kitchener Street (the main road into Martinborough) drive around The Square and exit left onto Jellicoe Street. Travel for 2kms. Turn left onto White Rock Road. Drive along this road for approximately 34kms, until you reach Tuturumuri School. Just past the school, cross the little bridge, and turn left onto Tora / Te Awaiti Road.
Drive approximately 3-4 minutes down Tora Road and look out for the large Tora Coastal Walk sign on the left hand side of the road. We are soon after this sign on the right hand side, at 298 Tora Road.
