There is a coastline beyond the hills that few are lucky enough to reach. But when they do, they never forget it.

This August, the Tora Coastal Walk – welcoming guests to New Zealand’s most spectacular coastline for over 30 years – opens its doors for a single winter day.

Meet the Elworthy family at Stony Bay Lodge, lace up your boots, and head out with us along the coast and up the Hiwi High Road. As we leave the crashing surf behind and begin our climb, the Wairarapa coast will unfold around you. We’ll stop at The Trig for a hot drink and home baking, enjoying panoramic views of the coast and inland ridgetops. Take a moment to simply stand in it, remembering the kind of silence you forgot existed.

Then we walk back. Because lunch is waiting.

Back at the lodge, a long table has been laid. The food is made from what grows and grazes on this land – unhurried and honest. There is local wine. There is good company. There is nowhere you need to be.
This is what winter in the Wairarapa is for.

The day

9.00am	Meet at Stony Bay Lodge. Coffee, introductions, some history of the area, boots on.
9.30am	Walk the Hiwi High Road – a meandering climb, steep at times, and reaching an elevation of 310m. Moderate fitness required.
Mid-morning	Stop at The Trig. Hot drink and home baking. Stand in the silence, take in the views.
Late morning	Descend and walk back along the coast.
1.00pm onwards	A long, unhurried lunch at the lodge. Food from the land, wine from the region. No rush.

Good To Know

Getting there	Meet us at the lodge – 81D Te Awaiti Road, Tora, Martinborough. A scenic drive of approximately 45 minutes from Martinborough.
What to wear	Sturdy footwear with ankle support (tramping boots are ideal). Warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and a hat. August in the Wairarapa is beautiful – and cold – so let’s be prepared.
Fitness	The walk is steep in places and will take approximately two hours at a leisurely pace to reach The Trig. The return leg is a bit quicker. If you have questions about whether this is right for you, get in touch.
Dietary requirements	Please let us know at booking. We will do our best to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies.
Places	Limited to 30.
Weather	We will go ahead if we can, but if weather conditions make the event unsafe, we will contact you to discuss options. Full refund will be provided if the event is cancelled.
Cancellations	If you need to cancel due to personal circumstances we will provide a full refund, less a $30 admin fee, provided 7 days’ notice is given.

The Tora Coastal Walk has been welcoming guests to the Wairarapa coast for over 30 years. Owned and operated by the Elworthy family, it is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular walking destinations – native bush, seal colonies, open ridgelines, and a working farm that stretches to the sea.
