First Night | Arrival at Whakapata Cottage, 298 Tora Road. Note: your arrival date is the first date of your booking, but you don’t walk until the following day. |
4pm – 6pm | Arrive at Whakapata Cottage, settle in and spend time with other members of your group. We’ll provide maps, and give you a brief overview of the walk. Your dinner provisions will be in the fridge, ready to heat and serve when your group has arrived. |
Day One | Whakapata Cottage to Stony Bay Lodge Degree of Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult Distance: 15.5km, 5-6 hours with breaks |
Morning | Have breakfast at your leisure, and depart on the first day of your walk by 9am. |
Daytime | Take in the amazing vistas, stop for lunch enroute, and make your way to the haven that is Stony Bay Lodge, your home for Night Two. |
Evening | Relax and reflect on the day. If you’re eager, take the short walk up behind the Lodge to The Crow’s Nest. Enjoy the delicious food prepared by Tineke, which just requires a small amount of input from your group when you’re ready to eat. |
Day Two | Stony Bay Lodge to Greentops Farmhouse Degree of difficulty: Easy Distance: 6-11kms (with extras), 2-5 hours |
Morning | Linger over breakfast, and set off no later than 10.30am. Visit the Opua Shipwreck (optional), before meandering along the coast to Greentops Farmhouse, stopping for lunch on your way. |
Afternoon | After a break, make your way up to The Trig. This is a gut-busting climb – and another optional extra – but one we highly recommend. You’ll be rewarded with unsurpassed views across the ocean. |
Evening | Settle in for the night at Greentops Farmhouse. |
Day Three | Greentops Farmhouse to Whakapata Cottage Degree of difficulty: Moderate Distance: 13kms, 4-5 hours |
8am – 9am | Head off on your final day along the banks of the Otoroi River, through regenerating NZ bush, back inland to where you started at Whakapata Cottage. |
1pm – 3pm | Your luggage will return to Whakapata Cottage by 1pm. Have a cuppa, a shower, and take a look at the Tora goodies available in our merchandise shed. Then, bid farewell to your fellow walkers, departing Tora feeling refreshed and rejuvenated! If you are flying out of Wellington, make sure your flight departs after 5pm. |
